What is GS1 Digital Link? A Plain-English Guide for Small Brands

Most brands have never heard of GS1 Digital Link — but it's what makes a QR code scan at checkout. Here's what it is and why your packaging needs it.

You’ve probably seen the phrase “QR code powered by GS1” and wondered what that means. Maybe your retailer asked for a “GS1 Digital Link QR code” and you thought any QR code would do. It won’t — and the difference matters more as January 2027 gets closer.

GS1 Digital Link explained simply: it’s a web URL with a specific structure that encodes your product’s unique identifier (GTIN) in a way that checkout scanners can read. The same code a shopper scans with their phone also rings up correctly at the register.

What a plain QR code can’t do

Most QR codes just encode a website URL — https://yourbrand.com/products/widget. That works fine for marketing. But a retail scanner doesn’t know what to do with it. It’s looking for a GTIN — the same number that lives inside your traditional barcode. A generic URL gives it nothing to work with.

This is the core problem: a plain QR code is a consumer tool, not a retail tool. If your packaging only has a regular QR code, you still need a traditional barcode alongside it. Two codes, one product.

GS1 Digital Link solves this by embedding the GTIN directly into the URL structure:

The /01/ is the GS1 Application Identifier for GTIN. The 14-digit number after it is your product’s GTIN. A checkout scanner reads this URL, extracts the GTIN, and processes the sale — exactly as it would from a traditional barcode. A shopper’s phone sees the same code as a normal link and gets directed to your product page, allergen info, sustainability data, or anything else you’ve set up.

One code. Both functions.

How the resolver works

The URL in a GS1 Digital Link QR code points to a resolver — a service that decides where to send the scan based on who’s scanning and what they’re looking for.

When a retailer’s scanner hits the resolver, it extracts the GTIN for POS processing. When a consumer scans it, the resolver checks which link types you’ve configured and routes them accordingly:

  • gs1:pip — product information page (the default consumer destination)
  • gs1:sustainabilityInfo — sustainability and environmental data
  • gs1:allergenInfo — allergen declarations
  • gs1:recipeInfo — recipes or preparation instructions
  • gs1:certificationInfo — compliance certifications

You control what each link type points to. Change the destination at any time without reprinting a single label — the QR code on the package stays the same. This is fundamentally different from a static QR code, where changing the destination requires new packaging.

It’s not just a QR code generator. You can’t take any QR code generator, point it at a URL, and have a GS1 Digital Link. The URL must follow the GS1 Digital Link URI syntax — specifically, it must contain your GTIN encoded with the correct Application Identifier.

It’s not the same as a Data Matrix. Data Matrix is a different 2D barcode format used mainly in healthcare and logistics. GS1 Digital Link can be encoded in a Data Matrix, but in retail consumer goods, it’s almost always a QR code.

It’s not optional after 2027. Sunrise 2027 — the GS1 initiative now backed by Walmart, Target, Kroger, Tesco, Carrefour, and 45 other major retailers — requires all retail POS systems to accept 2D barcodes by January 1, 2027. That doesn’t mean your traditional barcode stops working on that date, but POS systems must be able to read 2D codes. Brands that get ahead of this aren’t just compliant — they have a QR code on their packaging that actually does something useful for shoppers.

How to get started in four steps

  1. Confirm you have a registered GS1 prefix. Your GTINs must come from a GS1-registered company prefix — yours, not a reseller’s. If you’re not sure whether your barcodes are registered, run a GEPIR lookup at gs1.org.

  2. Choose a resolver. You need a service that hosts the GS1 Digital Link endpoint and routes scans to the right destinations. Some barcode platforms include this; you can also use GS1’s own resolver service.

  3. Configure your link types. At minimum, set up gs1:pip (your product page). Add gs1:allergenInfo or gs1:sustainabilityInfo if you have that content ready.

  4. Generate the QR code from the Digital Link URL. The QR code encodes the resolver URL — https://resolver.example.com/01/[GTIN]. This is what goes on your packaging, not a generic URL.

The technical overhead is lower than most brands expect. The hard part is making sure your GTIN is properly registered and that your resolver is configured correctly before you print anything.

With 234 days until January 1, 2027, there’s still time to do this properly — but not indefinitely. Labels and packaging have lead times. The brands getting caught short in late 2026 will be the ones who assumed they’d handle it next quarter.
