GS1 Sunrise 2027 Explained: Your Brand's Action Plan for January 1, 2027

GS1 Sunrise 2027 requires all retail POS systems globally to scan 2D barcodes by Jan 1, 2027. Here's what your brand needs to do — and why mid-2026 is your real deadline.

If you sell physical products at retail, GS1 Sunrise 2027 affects your packaging — and if you haven’t started yet, you’re already behind. January 1, 2027 is the date every major retail POS system globally must be capable of reading a 2D barcode. That’s 216 days from now. But packaging artwork freezes and production lead times mean your real deadline is closer to mid-2026 for any new SKUs hitting shelves before the year ends.

What GS1 Sunrise 2027 actually requires

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is an industry-wide commitment — coordinated by GS1, the nonprofit standards body that manages barcodes globally — under which retailers agree to upgrade their point-of-sale systems to read 2D barcodes by December 31, 2027. It is not a government regulation. It is, however, effectively mandatory for any brand supplying to major retail chains.

The 2D codes in question are GS1 Digital Link QR codes (or GS1 DataMatrix for space-constrained labels). A regular QR code pointing to your website does not qualify. The code must encode a GS1 Digital Link URI — a structured web address that contains your 14-digit GTIN — built according to the syntax defined in ISO/IEC 18975. If the data string doesn’t conform to that standard, POS scanners cannot extract your GTIN and the code fails at checkout.

More than 60 retail chains have publicly committed to 2D readiness by the deadline: Walmart, Target, Kroger, Wegmans, Dillard’s, Publix, Tesco, Carrefour, and Woolworths among them. Kroger already has live 2D scanning running at checkout. Dillard’s CTO stated at GS1 Connect that Sunrise 2027 compliance “won’t be fully optional for brands.” Wegmans has announced a forthcoming supplier letter on 2D adoption requirements.

Why packaging timelines make mid-2026 the real deadline

Here is the part that catches most brands off guard: packaging lead times.

A product moving through new artwork design, print supplier onboarding, inventory flush of old packaging, and distribution typically takes 18 to 36 months from decision to shelf. That means brands targeting any retail-ready 2D barcode for products shipping in late 2026 are already in their artwork freeze window — or past it.

The problem compounds because the steps to get a compliant GS1 Digital Link QR code are sequential. You cannot generate the code until you have a live resolver. You cannot configure the resolver until your GTINs are assigned. You cannot assign GTINs until you have a valid GS1 Company Prefix. GS1 membership applications are processed manually and can take weeks.

There is also a clean-up risk: many brands discover their GTINs came from third-party resellers rather than GS1 directly. Those codes draw from the reseller’s GS1 prefix, and any GEPIR lookup — the kind Amazon and Walmart run during compliance checks — will return the reseller’s company name, not yours. You would need to reassign GTINs before proceeding. That is an additional delay that can take months if your products are already in distribution. What a fully compliant setup looks like

A Sunrise 2027-compliant product carries both a traditional 1D UPC or EAN barcode and a GS1 Digital Link QR code on its packaging. Both encode the same GTIN. GS1 recommends placing them within 50mm of each other to avoid scan errors in high-speed grocery checkout environments. Neither code is going away during the transition — dual-marking is the explicit expectation.

The QR code data string follows this structure:

The /01/ is the GS1 Application Identifier for GTIN. The 14-digit number is your padded GTIN. The resolver at id.yourdomain.com routes the scan depending on who is scanning: a retail POS scanner extracts the GTIN and processes the sale; a consumer’s smartphone gets directed to a product page, allergen information, sustainability data, or a Digital Product Passport for EU compliance purposes.

The resolver is the strategic asset here. Because it sits between the QR code and the destination, you can update where scans are routed without reprinting packaging. As the EU Digital Product Passport regulation phases in for textiles in 2027 and electronics in 2027–2030, the same QR code infrastructure handles that requirement too — no new code on pack required. Five steps to get there before packaging timelines close

  1. Join GS1 and get a Company Prefix. Register with your national GS1 Member Organization — GS1 US at gs1us.org for US-based brands. Membership gives you a licensed GS1 Company Prefix, the numeric root of all your GTINs. Without a valid, active prefix, no GS1 Digital Link QR code is conformant, and no GEPIR check will return your company name.

  2. Audit and assign GTINs for every SKU. Each unique product variant — each size, flavor, color, configuration — requires its own GTIN. If any existing codes came from a third-party reseller, plan for reassignment before you proceed. This is the step brands most frequently underestimate, and the one most likely to add months to your timeline.

  3. Set up a GS1 Digital Link resolver. You need a resolver to route 2D barcode scans to the right destination. Use a hosted resolver service to get live faster, or self-host at a subdomain like id.yourbrand.com for full control over link types and routing rules. The resolver can be updated at any time without touching your packaging artwork.

  4. Generate GS1-compliant QR codes. Once your resolver is live and GTINs are assigned, generate QR codes encoding the correct GS1 Digital Link URI structure. Standard QR code generators do not produce Sunrise-compliant codes — the data string must conform to ISO/IEC 18975 syntax, or the code will fail at POS.

  5. Update packaging artwork with dual marking. Submit updated artwork to your print supplier with both the 1D and 2D codes included. This is your longest lead-time item. If you’re approaching any packaging refresh, make this the priority above any other change. Brands that wait until late 2026 to start artwork updates will not make the retail windows before the deadline.
